Personality:
Honey's nickname suits him quite well, for the most part. On a day-to-day basis Honey is cheerfully easygoing, spending his time eating sweets and playing, collecting and looking at cute things. He's friendly and bubbly, and every single manga panel where he appears or speaks displays fluffier speech bubbles and gratuitous hearts and flowers for a reason - he's sweet. Even the nigh-uncharmable Haruhi is taken in by Honey's antics, agreeing to play with Usa-Chan and allowing him to call her Haru-chan without complaint after the initial use. His "type" in the host club is the "loli-shouta" type, or the "cute" type, and this means he plays a childishly cute part (although it isn't really a part he's playing - or at least not one hundred percent). That's the side of him people see the most. That is not, however, the only side.

Although Renge's idea of Honey being a completely dark and rude character hiding his ways with sweetness is pretty well off, she wasn't entirely wrong about Honey having a darker side. When Honey gets annoyed, he can be fairly blunt and even rude - although he still uses the same sugar-sweet tone, hearts and flowers and all, which can make the difference even more chilling (in the opinions of the others, at least). If he gets mad - god forbid - the flowers and hearts abruptly dissipate and people generally react with varying degrees of sheer terror. Luckily for everyone, few things seem to really upset Honey. He's notably angry when people mess with his friends, yes, but otherwise? Beyond messing with Bun-Bun (seriously: his stuffed animal is off limits for messing with) or not taking the time to savour cake properly (he hunts Takashi down at one point for this offense, although he's over it within five seconds), Honey doesn't really lose his temper much at all. The only things to really worry about are Honey when he's just woken up (he doesn't like being woken up) and Honey when he's on enforced sweet deprivation. Neither is particularly friendly or willing to play nice.

The Host Club members have seen this dark side off and on, although Honey generally doesn't get mad too often and is fairly easy to pacify when he does get upset - if you're Takashi, at least, who knows his cousin well enough to calm him down with a few well-picked words. Or if you're smart enough to distract him with cake or Bun-Bun. And the reason most people are terrified when Honey flips to "Dark" mode? He just doesn't do that often enough that anyone much expects it, except maybe Takashi. The number of times Honey has lost his temper throughout the entire series amounts to only a handful, and he's never held a grudge for longer than a chapter, if that. The two times he was upset for the space of a chapter? One involved sweet deprivation due to a cavity and the other involved sort-of-fake-arguing with Takashi over Bun-Bun and (you guessed it!) cake eating privileges. On a day-to-day basis his tempers last for only a few seconds or minutes, when they occur at all.

Despite seeming childish and oblivious to most people, Honey is actually really observant and intelligent. He was the top student in his year throughout high school (Honey is actually 18 and fully graduated, despite how young he looks), and furthermore was one of the only two to know where everyone stood romantically throughout the entire series. The other was Takashi, of course. Honey also often made remarks that proved he had either guessed or knew what was going on or what had been going on when people tried pointing things out to him. While he does need things explained from time to time, Honey is usually shown to discuss with Takashi any current goings-on that show a good understanding of...well, everything going on. He's also a pretty reliable person when it comes to helping and supporting his friends, as shown when he allowed Kaoru to stay with him when the twins had one of their fights, and by his advice to Kaoru when the younger Hitachiin was at the Haninozuka residence.

Honey is also a fairly serious person in his own way. Admittedly he doesn't seem to be, right now. He willingly gave up sweets and cute things when he was younger, however, and tried to become a "manly" Haninozuka man. It...didn't really go that well, but it was something he gave his all to, because his father told him he needed to do so. However, when Tamaki told him it was fine to be himself, and that he thought strength came from not lying to oneself, Honey thought about that very seriously, too, and decided Tamaki had a point. After that validation and his own consideration of the matter (and a discussion with Takashi, of course), Honey threw himself into...well, being himself. Honey always gives one hundred percent to Host Club activities and anything else he decides to do. He even dropped the Karate Club, which he was previously captain of, because he wanted to give the Host Club his full attention.

The layers to his personality make Honey a bit hard to pin down for others. Because of his accidental duality - people just focus more on Honey's cheerful, sweet nature rather than all the rest of him, creating a "duality" that doesn't really exist - Honey can occasionally completely baffle people. He'll come out with things that completely shock others, because he says things that don't match his "image" or reacts to things in a manner that isn't sweet. It sort of adds up to him being one of the more enigmatic members of the club, although this isn't at all on purpose. Honey just very much took to heart Takashi's words about being true to himself, and he doesn't much concern himself with what other people might want to see or expect from him - although he's been shown to be aware of those expectations.
Abilities:
Despite his size and looks, Honey is actually ridiculously competent when it comes to athletics. He's the first heir of the Haninozuka family, which requires their children to learn several forms of martial arts in addition to the family form, in addition to requiring any family members to spar upon meeting outside of the home. He's actually a karate and judo champion, and previously was head of one of the clubs at school before quitting to join the host club. Over the course of the series he's been shown to be very good at sports - snowboarding, swimming, high jumps, running - as well as capable of taking people on in a fighting sense (he once took out Kyouya's entire cadre of armed bodyguards on his own - unarmed! - and can throw Takashi - his elder cousin who is over twice his size and also a combatant - if he gets ticked off enough). This isn't a supernatural prowess, either; Honey's just a talented martial artist/athletic dude. He's also very intelligent, despite his typical manner of conduct.
