Personality:
Honey's nickname suits him quite well, for the most part. On a day-to-day basis Honey is cheerfully easygoing, spending his time eating sweets and playing, collecting and looking at cute things. He's friendly and bubbly, and every single manga panel where he appears or speaks displays fluffier speech bubbles and gratuitous hearts and flowers for a reason - he's sweet. Even the nigh-uncharmable Haruhi is taken in by Honey's antics, agreeing to play with Usa-Chan and allowing him to call her Haru-chan without complaint after the initial use. His "type" in the host club is the "loli-shouta" type, or the "cute" type, and this means he plays a childishly cute part (although it isn't really a part he's playing - or at least not one hundred percent). That's the side of him people see the most. That is not, however, the only side.Strengths:
Although Renge's idea of Honey being a completely dark and rude character hiding his ways with sweetness is pretty well off, she wasn't entirely wrong about Honey having a darker side. When Honey gets annoyed, he can be fairly blunt and even rude - although he still uses the same sugar-sweet tone, hearts and flowers and all, which can make the difference even more chilling (in the opinions of the others, at least). If he gets mad - god forbid - the flowers and hearts abruptly dissipate and people generally react with varying degrees of sheer terror. Luckily for everyone, few things seem to really upset Honey. He's notably angry when people mess with his friends, yes, but otherwise? Beyond messing with Bun-Bun (seriously: his stuffed animal is off limits for messing with) or not taking the time to savour cake properly (he hunts Takashi down at one point for this offense, although he's over it within five seconds), Honey doesn't really lose his temper much at all. The only things to really worry about are Honey when he's just woken up (he doesn't like being woken up) and Honey when he's on enforced sweet deprivation. Neither is particularly friendly or willing to play nice.
The Host Club members have seen this dark side off and on, although Honey generally doesn't get mad too often and is fairly easy to pacify when he does get upset - if you're Takashi, at least, who knows his cousin well enough to calm him down with a few well-picked words. Or if you're smart enough to distract him with cake or Bun-Bun. And the reason most people are terrified when Honey flips to "Dark" mode? He just doesn't do that often enough that anyone much expects it, except maybe Takashi. The number of times Honey has lost his temper throughout the entire series amounts to only a handful, and he's never held a grudge for longer than a chapter, if that. The two times he was upset for the space of a chapter? One involved sweet deprivation due to a cavity and the other involved sort-of-fake-arguing with Takashi over Bun-Bun and (you guessed it!) cake eating privileges. On a day-to-day basis his tempers last for only a few seconds or minutes, when they occur at all.
Despite seeming childish and oblivious to most people, Honey is actually really observant and intelligent. He was the top student in his year throughout high school (Honey is actually 18 and fully graduated, despite how young he looks), and furthermore was one of the only two to know where everyone stood romantically throughout the entire series. The other was Takashi, of course. Honey also often made remarks that proved he had either guessed or knew what was going on or what had been going on when people tried pointing things out to him. While he does need things explained from time to time, Honey is usually shown to discuss with Takashi any current goings-on that show a good understanding of...well, everything going on. He's also a pretty reliable person when it comes to helping and supporting his friends, as shown when he allowed Kaoru to stay with him when the twins had one of their fights, and by his advice to Kaoru when the younger Hitachiin was at the Haninozuka residence.
Honey is also a fairly serious person in his own way. Admittedly he doesn't seem to be, right now. He willingly gave up sweets and cute things when he was younger, however, and tried to become a "manly" Haninozuka man. It...didn't really go that well, but it was something he gave his all to, because his father told him he needed to do so. However, when Tamaki told him it was fine to be himself, and that he thought strength came from not lying to oneself, Honey thought about that very seriously, too, and decided Tamaki had a point. After that validation and his own consideration of the matter (and a discussion with Takashi, of course), Honey threw himself into...well, being himself. Honey always gives one hundred percent to Host Club activities and anything else he decides to do. He even dropped the Karate Club, which he was previously captain of, because he wanted to give the Host Club his full attention.
The layers to his personality make Honey a bit hard to pin down for others. Because of his accidental duality - people just focus more on Honey's cheerful, sweet nature rather than all the rest of him, creating a "duality" that doesn't really exist - Honey can occasionally completely baffle people. He'll come out with things that completely shock others, because he says things that don't match his "image" or reacts to things in a manner that isn't sweet. It sort of adds up to him being one of the more enigmatic members of the club, although this isn't at all on purpose. Honey just very much took to heart Takashi's words about being true to himself, and he doesn't much concern himself with what other people might want to see or expect from him - although he's been shown to be aware of those expectations.
• Despite his size and looks, Honey is actually ridiculously competent when it comes to athletics. He's the first heir of the Haninozuka family, which requires their children to learn several forms of martial arts in addition to the family form, in addition to requiring any family members to spar upon meeting outside of the home. Over the course of the series he's been shown to be very good at sports - snowboarding, swimming, high jumps, running - as well as capable of taking people on in a fighting sense (he once took out Kyouya's entire cadre of armed bodyguards on his own - unarmed! - and can throw Takashi if he gets ticked off enough).Weaknesses:
• Like many animanga characters, Honey can eat a lot. Especially if it is sweet, and even more especially if it involves cakes or strawberries. No one is really sure where he puts it away, and his brother is weirded out that Honey occasionally wakes up in the middle of the night to eat a multi-tiered cake all by himself.
• Very observant and intelligent, despite appearances and manner.
• Friendly and outgoing.
• Huge, huge sweet tooth. Honey can't really restrain himself from cakes - it's really, really pathetic when he tries, and he hasn't tried for years, ever since Tamaki told him it was fine to just be himself. He's also weak to cute things; he likes them a lot.Pokémon Information
• Like the other Host Club members, Honey can lack common sense of the commoner sort. He's not one worst offenders (Tamaki, Tamaki, Tamaki) but he's just as baffled and awed as everyone else by Haruhi's "commoner's sense".
• He's never really had to take care of himself before. The athletic parts of travel might not be a big deal, but cooking for himself and remembering to brush his teeth and all of that? Yeah.
• Honey might be honest about things he likes, but he's been known to sort of play around with other people's heads - he knew Reiko was trying to ask him out with the help of the twins and Haruhi, for example, but didn't say anything because he thought it was "cute" that she was trying her hardest. At another time he knew Takashi really wanted to say something to him, but ignored it because he thought Takashi should just tell him if that were the case (he said this in a rather blunt and cold way, shocking everyone else).
• He does have his oblivious and dimwitted moments - although tied in with the above, it's hard to tell if he's playing a part of not sometimes. Honey often has completely airheaded or random remarks to make that have no deeper meaning whatsoever, though. "Did you know that sports in Ancient Greece used to be played while completely naked" is an example; that remark sent the Host Club girls into a fit, although he meant absolutely nothing by it other than a random "hey this is mildly interesting" aside, and proceeded to discuss it with Takashi.

[ The video feed is flicked on to a moving scene. Some ground, a shot of sky - okay, give him a moment. After a second the gear is turned to view Honey's beaming face; he appears to be hanging off the back of a Kangaskhan, who seems to be tolerating his monkey-like antics with all the patience of a doting mother. In the absence of a baby, she appears to have decided her new trainer more or less fits the bill. ]Third Person Sample:
Ne, ne, Kan-chan! Smile for the camera!! Big and wiiiide! [ Kan-chan will flash her teeth to appease her tiny charge as he moves the gear closer to her, why not. He is so enthusiastic. She is the best mother. ] That's it! A first impression is important, right?
[ Honey has yet to drop the light, playful tone of voice, but he'll get to a slightly more serious note now. Kind of. He heaves a bit of sigh, dramatic in a practiced sort of way. ] Ahhhhhhhn, I don't recall going anywhere...did Tama-chan plan something without saying? No one seems to know! And no one's numbers are listed here, although I tried them all! Takashi will be worried, you know, I was supposed to meet up with him after class...Kan-chan, there was going to be cake...!
[ And that, of course, is the moment where he switches from light and breezy to legitimately put out. His priorities. ] And now there isn't any cake, it's sad, right? [ There, there. While Honey mopes on her back, the Kangaskhan pats his head gently. After a second of sulking, Honey's back to being cheerful, and finally winds down to what he probably ought to have started with. ] Takashi...! Tama-chaaaan, Kyo-chan, Haru Hika Kao-channnnn, Reikooooo-chan! Can you hear me? Kan-chan and I would like an answer! Ah, I lost Bun-Bun, too...He wasn't here when I got here. Today is an Bun-Bun day, too...
Well, we'll go see if there's a shop with cakes. Kan-chan, you want one, right? We'll savor them properly and wait for everyone else to call us! Onward!! [ ...He's apparently not getting off of her back, he's just going to let her tote him around. And apparently Kan-chan is allowing this, since they start to move as Honey shuts off the gear. ]
Honey's first instinct had been a fairly sound one, upon waking in a strange place with a strange woman and a strange creature: locate his phone and call one of the others, preferably Takashi but really just anyone he knew. Someone surely had to know what was going on, after all. And while he couldn't find his mobile, he found - a pokegear? was that what she'd called it? - and plugged in the mobile numbers of every friend he had, hopefully. None of them worked.
His second instinct had been to eat breakfast, because it was there and he was hungry and there was no real point in not eating breakfast, especially if he was going to be going on a journey, which Mom seemed to think he would be.
After that he ran out of instincts, besides a general inclination to poke around and see if he couldn't run across the others, and a hankering for something sweeter than the plain breakfast fare. At least he wasn't completely alone and left to his own devices. There was Kan-chan the Kangaskhan, nicknamed fairly quickly and exceedingly simply, although given that his stuffed rabbit's name was Bun-Bun...
Well, suffice it to say Kan-chan was par for the course. Honey had never played Pokemon back home, although some of the scenario felt vaguely familiar in a way he couldn't place - he'd probably hear about it, or something (and he had, of course he had, but he'd never had the time for that sort of thing before), but he wasn't paying too much mind to that feeling. Instead he was attempting to locate a place to buy a coat, or at least some sort of scarf.
It was a practical consideration that had never been a problem before, although budgeting on 3000 yen - or "poke"yen - was pretty difficult. Still, it managed to spread across a cheap jacket that Haruhi probably would have approved of (which was potentially tragic, but never mind) and two scarves. One went around his neck, of course, but the other went around Kan-chan's. Honey couldn't help but tie it in a bow, with a dramatic little flourish. "There! That should keep the chill off, Kan-chan! It wasn't nearly this cold at home, you know."
